In today's world of instantaneous communications and with the revolution in social networking, I believe we can ramp up this fundraising effort on a global scale very quickly. As you are aware, the earthquake in China has left over 5.5 million people homeless and over 80,000 dead. We need to act on this fundraising initiative as quickly as possible. Without food and shelter, many people will perish. I hope that my fellow Rotary colleagues will take this opportunity to demonstrate our mantra, "Service Above Self", to the world community unequivocally and forcefully.

Progress Report
23/05/08 11:46
Yesterday, we toured the disaster
areas. There are tents of al shapes, sizes and qualities.
A lot of these are very cheaply made camping tents which would not last very long.
it is estimated that some of the people will have be in tents for 3 to six months, or even longer.
The Shelter Box tents are doubled layered at the top, are made with materials that are to last for at least six months to one year depending on weather conditions. They also have a seamless bottom sheet that is seemingly connected to the sides.

who came from the hardest hit zone Yingxiu Town, trying to persuade
the soldiers of People's Liberation Army to accept his "gift"-a bag
of cookies. In China, PLA is not allowed to take anything from the
ordinary people. To give his gift and show his gratitude to the
soldiers for coming to rescue his severely damaged hometown, the
old man had knelt down serveral times, insisting that soliders
accept his gift. The soliders then have had to ...I cried every
time when watching this clip. Read More...

23/05/08 10:16
Four hundred ShelterBox containers
will reach China’s Sichuan Province this weekend to help alleviate
the acute housing shortage after a 12 May earthquake there left
50,000 people dead and more than five million homeless. Another 400
containers are en route to the area.
Each container provides a tent, stove, water purification kit, blankets, tools, and other necessities to help a family of 10 survive for six months. ShelterBox is a UK-based disaster relief organization supported by Rotary clubs around the world. Read More...

Relief Blog Launched
Rotarian Bill Chiang who is actively on the ground in Sichuan has advised us to set up a blog for this project - so here goes. There has been no end of tragedy reported in the past 2 weeks - but now it is time to move on with dealing with the results of this disaster - and we would like the support of Rotarians worldwide to help us.
