THE Rotary Club of Shanghai will help raise awareness of AIDS in China with two charity events next week.

A gala will be held at the Pudong Shangri-la Hotel on Monday. Shanghai Sheshan International Golf Club will host a golf fund-raiser the next day in Songjiang District.

The events are expected to collect up to 1 million yuan (US$124,833), with all proceeds going to the Shanghai Charity Foundation, said the secretary of the Rotary Club of Shanghai, Peter Fu.

At the Shangri-la, 650 guests will attend a cocktail party and dinner with President of Rotary International Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar.

More than half of the guests will be overseas Rotarians from 45 countries. Donations will be raised through silent auctions and raffles.

The gala will start at 5:30pm and tickets cost 880 yuan.

Tickets for the golf fund-raiser are sold out, said Fu.

The Rotary Club is an international network of business people and professionals who provide humanitarian services to the needy.

It was founded in 1905 in Chicago and has over 1.2 million members in 163 countries.

The Rotary Club of Shanghai was opened in June 2001.
