Dr. Tom Frieden, director, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provides an update on progress being made to end polio in the three remaining endemic countries.
Some interesting highlights from World Polio Day (24 October):
- Nigeria is close to eradication - and the expertise gained from this effort enabled Lagos to quickly deal with and prevent the spread of the Ebola virus.
- 85% of cases are in Pakistan.
- Afghanistan has done an amazing job to eradicate the disease - but most new cases are coming across the border from Pakistan.
We are indeed "THIS CLOSE" to eradicating polio.
