Second Peace Fellow from China

GSE Alumni Tony Zhang proves that "persistence overcomes resistance."

This weekend we were all delighted to discover that Tony ZHANG Han received a letter with the following message:

"On behalf of the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation, we are pleased to inform you that you have been selected to receive a 2015 Rotary Peace Fellowship for studies as part of the Rotary Peace Centers program."

Tony has been selected to join the 14th intake of the Peace Fellowship program to study at the University of Queensland as our second outbound Chinese Rotary Peace Fellow, following in the footsteps of Amy Liu.

Tony is a no stranger to Rotarians in China. He was a volunteer who helped Rtn. Bill Chiang coordinate disaster relief with outside Rotary partners following the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake. During our 2013 conference in Chengdu he represented Shelterbox (Tony is an accredited Shelterbox disaster relief team member) onsite with a display of a Shelterbox tent and supplies. He also showed another side of his character by ably co-hosting the evening's entertainment. During 2013-14 Rotary year he was selected to be a team member of an outbound Group Study Exchange team that visited Switzerland, and we were very fortunate to have him join us at this year's 2014 Rotary China Conference to present a truly spectacular presentation about the GSE trip on behalf of all his team colleagues.

This journey has not been an easy ride for Tony. His application was twice rejected but he was coached by Rtn. Bill Chiang not to give up and we are very pleased that he stayed strong and re-applied this year, to finally achieve success.

Congratulations Tony!
