Carl-Ludwig Dörwald was born in 1958 in Herford, Germany. He graduated in 1978 from Gerhard-Rohlfs-Gymnasium, Bremen.
From 1978 to 1980 he joined the military service as a Music Soldier in the Heeresmusikkorps 11 in Bremen. Music was part of his life since the early 60s playing the oboe and piano in various orchestras, including his own chamber orchestra and performing solo concerts with the oboe.
He received his Master in Economics at the University of Bonn in 1986 and studied part time Chinese and Indonesian languages in Bonn and Chinese at the National Taiwan Normal University in 1983 to 1984. In 2001, he joined an Executive Seminar at the business school INSEAD in France.
From 1987 to 1988, Carl-Ludwig Dörwald started his business career at the University of Bonn and then in the Asia Pacific Centre of the Stadtsparkasse Köln, both in Germany. In 1989, he joined Gerling, a leading industrial insurer which brought him in 1995 to China. He established the group’s first representative office in China and secured approval for the operating license as a non-life insurer. He also achieved the signing of cooperation with a Chinese university, established an insurance research center at a Chinese university, and signed letters of intents with Chinese entities.
Following strategy changes of the company, Carl-Ludwig Dörwald left Gerling, to help the European Union to implement an EU-China Financial Services Cooperation Project as the Director Insurance. In July 2005, he joined DKV as the new Chief Representative China and Vice President Asia.
He also served as Founding Chairman of the Insurance Working Group and Founding Member and Supervisory Board Member of the European Chamber in China (1998 to 2003), Board Member German Chamber China (1998-2000), Representative of the German Insurers Association (GDV) in China (since 2000-2003), and Founding Member of the “German Business Group for Sustainable Development in China” in 2000, and Member of Steering Committee of EU-WTO Project for China (2001-2002).
Carl-Ludwig Dörwald has written several articles in professional magazines, newspapers, and books on insurance, employee benefits and China’s insurance market. He also is a frequent speaker on similar topics at various institutions such as APEC Conference, International Chamber of Commerce Conference, OECD Conference, WBCSD, UIBE, Chartered Insurance Institute in Changsha.
Carl-Ludwig Dörwald was invited by the founder of the Beijing Rotary Fellowship Group, Hermann Heid, and Jens Dreier to join Rotary in 2001. In the following year, he served as the Coordinator of the Speaker’s Program. In 2003, he was appointed Chair of the Community Service Committee and in 2004, the club elected him as President Elect, and President in 2005-2006. During his term, the Club received the Charter by Rotary International and he became the Charter President. In his year as president, the club also received the Presidential Significant Project Award Salutation, the Presidential Membership and Extension Award Salutation as well as the Presidential Service Award Salutation. He is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.
In 2006, SR Christopher Bramsen appointed him as Chairman of the RI Programs of the Rotary China Team, which provides guidance to the Rotary clubs in China.
He speaks German, English and Chinese, and has basic knowledge of French, Spanish and Indonesian. He is married to Shirley Man Ngar from Hong Kong. They have one daughter Carmen. Areas of interest are: Music, (used to be an active oboe and piano player) and sports (Ironman, marathon runner, biker and swimmer).
